Microsoft is transforming Copilot from a simple chat-based assistant into a highly advanced agentic AI platform with its latest Wave 3 update (April 2026). This shift marks a major evolution where Copilot can now perform tasks autonomously, rather than just responding to prompts.

The biggest highlight of this update is the rise of Agentic AI, where Copilot can handle multi-step workflows independently. For example, a single command like “Prepare the board meeting” allows Copilot to collect data from Excel, create Word documents, generate PowerPoint presentations and even send Outlook invites automatically. This is powered by Agent 365, a centralized system that manages AI agents securely across organizations, along with Work IQ, an intelligent layer that understands business context, collaboration patterns and decision-making processes.

Microsoft has also expanded flexibility through Copilot Studio, allowing support for multiple AI models such as GPT-5, Claude 3.5/3.6 and Claude Opus. Developers can now build and customize AI agents directly within Visual Studio Code, making it easier to create complex workflows.

Several app-specific improvements enhance productivity across Microsoft 365. In Teams, Copilot can now analyze files from enterprise search without manual uploads. In Excel, it supports local files and can even generate Python-based data analysis. Outlook Mobile introduces a “Voice Catch-up” feature for hands-free email management, while Copilot Pages improves workflow alignment using notebooks and shortcuts.

For enterprises, Microsoft has introduced the Microsoft 365 E7 (Frontier Suite), combining Copilot, Agent 365 and Work IQ with advanced security. Additionally, new Sales Agent capabilities help teams capture voice notes and automatically sync meeting data with CRM systems.

Overall, the Microsoft Copilot update represents a major leap—from a reactive chat assistant to a powerful, autonomous agentic AI system designed to streamline workflows, boost productivity and redefine how businesses operate in 2026.
